At the moment I am involved in a lot of different projects:
I just finished arranging and recording the strings for the new FISH album A Feast of Consequences that will be released after the summer.
Supertramp saxplayer John Helliwell played a concert in Manchester with the Royal Northern Conservatory Bigband in which Supertramps music was featured. They played my arrangement of The Logical Song. I will be playing a small concerttour with John again in November in The Netherlands and Belgium. With thanks to the Parkhotel in Horst (The Netherlands)
Last March I had the pleasure, and honour, of playing with Marillion at the Marillion Weekend at Port Zélande in The Netherlands. I was invited to take keyboarder Mark Kelly s place in Beautiful
The documentary In the Now about the songwriting partnership between Iain Matthews and myself is finished. Cameraman and director Peter Jong and editor Olivier Hamaker did a great job. The prémière will be on September 14th at De Kasteelboerderij in Horst (Netherlands) were Iain and myself will also play a small concert.

For the thirth year in a row SUPERTRAMP saxplayer John Helliwell will come to The Netherlands in November for some concerts with me. We will be joined by drummer Sjoerd Rutten, bassplayer Norbert Leurs, and the very talented singer Joosje Jochems. We will play some of my compositions, new material, and a Supertramp song or two. ‘Paintings in Minor Lila’ is an album with new compositions and with interpretations of Marillion songs. It is my debut solo album and it really is everything I hoped it would be. Very personal, words can’t express. But ‘Phoenix’, the closing song of the album comes close in describing.

The cover of my first solo album, ‘Paintings in Minor Lila’, features a painting I made and titled ‘kindness’. ‘Kindness’ is exactly what comes to my mind thinking about the realization of this cd.
I’ve had the idea for a solo album for a few years now. But I never could figure out what it should be about. The more I tried and thought about it, it became very clear: If I was going to do a solo album it had to include new music and music that I was really passionate about. That’s when I decided to take some of my favourite Marillion songs and interpret them in a personal way where I would still feel the words and music of the original version. I also had the idea to take some of my favourite lyrics by H and Fish and have them narrated in combination with piano & string quartet.
I recorded a string arrangement for ‘This Train is My Life’ and sent it to Steve Hogarth, just for the sake of sharing it with him. Steve liked the idea and my arrangement and suggested to do the narration himself….Wow…I gratefully accepted his kind offer and we came up with an original, beautiful and intense version of ‘Train’ with voice and string quartet that does justice to H’s great words. Very personal and universal at the same time.
Having Steve on my solo album is a true gift and it made me think about how special it would be if Fish would also do a version of one of my favourite Marillion songs. So I made a piano & string quartet arrangement of ‘Pseudo Silk Kimono’ , the first Marillion song I heard as a 16 year old boy , a life changing experience at that time. I sent my arrangement to Fish, told him about Steve’s narration of ‘Train’ and about my solo album, and asked if he would also consider it. Without any hesitation he offered to do it. It was deeply emotional to hear his voice in combination with my piano-playing and string arrangement.
Words can’t express my gratitude to Steve H and Fish. What it means to me to have these two men contribute to my first solo album also goes beyond words. An act of pure kindness and selflessness.
‘Paintings in Minor Lila’ also features the Limburg Stringquartet, the rhythm section of the Searing Quartet: Sjoerd Rutten (drums) & Norbert Leurs (bass) , and two of my favourite saxplayers: Supertramp’s John Helliwell and Leo Janssen (Metropole Orchestra). Iain Matthews, with whom I have an inspiring and productive musical partnership , also contributed a beautiful song.
All the people involved shared with me their great musicianship and their positive spirit. The album was co-produced by my dear friend Arno op den Camp.

Mooie tijden. Op 16 april jl. (NB op mijn verjaardag) kregen Gerard van Maasakkers en ik de Annie M.G. Schmidt Prijs voor ons lied ‘Zomaar Onverwacht’. Het was een prachtige feestavond in het Dela Mar theater in Amsterdam, waarbij o.a. ook Wende Snijders, Karin Bloemen, Freek de Jonge, Lucie de Lange, en Brigitte Kaandorp acte de présence gaven. Claudia de Breij en Mike Boddé leidden ons mooi door de avond. Na de prijsuitreiking zong Gerard een prachtige versie van ‘Zomaar Onverwacht’ met begeleiding van het Metropole Orkest o.l.v. Jurjen Hempel, en met een prachtig arrangement van Bob Zimmermann.
“In the Now” het album van I.E. (Iain Matthews & Egbert Derix) wordt prima ontvangen. We zijn er erg blij mee dat het is uitgekomen bij Universal op het VERVE label. In maart hebben we een aantal concerten gegeven in Engeland en Schotland. Tevens hebben we er nu een booking agent (ADASTRA) die voor ons een UK tour in 2013 aan het opzetten is. Dit jaar ook weer een aantal mooie concerten bij Cambrinus in Horst. Ik zal er o.a. spelen met Eric Vloeimans (september) en wederom met Supertramp saxofonist John Helliwell (november) . Zie concertagenda op deze site.
De documentaire die Peter Jong aan het maken is over de samenwerking tussen Iain Matthews en mij krijgt steeds meer gestalte, het is de bedoeling dat deze voor de zomer af is. Dat geldt overigens ook voor mijn solo cd waarbij de muziek van Marillion de rode draad is.
